Rosacea

Rosacea

Rosacea is a chronic skin disorder commonly effecting the cheeks, chin and nose. It is an inflammatory condition presenting with variable symptoms.

Initial symptoms present as flushing which becomes more frequent and eventually leads to persistent facial redness. Skin becomes hyper-reactive/sensitive due to sensitive and swollen blood vessels.

There unfortunately isn’t an exact cause of rosacea. However there can be a combinations of factors and triggers that can exacerbate rosacea.

Rosacea

What is it?

Rosacea is a chronic skin disorder commonly effecting the cheeks, chin and nose. It is an inflammatory condition presenting with variable symptoms.

Initial symptoms present as flushing which becomes more frequent and eventually leads to persistent facial redness. Skin becomes hyper-reactive/sensitive due to sensitive and swollen blood vessels. Pimples, papules and pustules start to form however a true rosacea won’t have any comedones (blackheads) in the area. Facials swelling can occur due to excess fluid and proteins leaking out of the blood vessels and overwhelming the lymphatic system.

The condition is more common in people with lighter genetic skin type.

Grades of Rosacea

Grade 1- erythematotelangiectatic rosacea: characterised by flushing and persistent redness. It may also include visible blood vessels.

Grade 2- papulopustular rosacea: characterised by persistent redness with transient papules and pustules(bumps and pimples).

Grade 3- phymatous rosacea: characterised by skin thickening, often resulting in an enlargement of the nose from excess tissue.

Grade 4- ocular rosacea: characterised by occular manifestations such as dry eye, tearing and burning, swollen eyelids, styes and potential vision loss from corneal damage.

The dermodex mite + bacteria

Microscopic Demodex mites are a natural part of the human microbiome. Two species of Demodex are found in humans. Demodex folliculorum live in hair follicles, primarily on the face as well as in the meibomian glands of the eyelids.

Demodex brevis live in the sebaceous glands of the skin.
While Demodex folliculorum are found on the skin of all humans, they frequently occur in greater numbers in those with rosacea. There has been much debate as to whether their increased numbers are a cause or result of rosacea. However, evidence appears to be mounting that an overabundance of Demodex may possibly trigger an immune response in people with rosacea, or that the inflammation may be caused by certain bacteria associated with the mites.

Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is a condition where large amounts of bacteria are present in the small bowel. These bacteria are the types that are typically found in the colon. There has been many studies done that have demonstrated a link between the two due to poor gut health and function.

There unfortunately isn’t an exact cause of rosacea. However there can be a combinations of factors and triggers that can exacerbate rosacea:

Food and lifestyle – high histamine & inflammatory foods such as sugars, dairy, caffeine, alcohol, gluten, spicy foods, tomatoes, chocolate and citrus fruits. Smoking and drinking alcohol. Strenuous exercise and sports. Hot bath or saunas.

Environmental + extreme temperature changes - heat is linked with increased inflammation in people with Rosacea.

The Demodex mite - Microscopic Demodex mites are a natural part of the human microbiome — the ecological community of microorganisms that live within and on the body. Two species of Demodex are found in humans. Demodex folliculorum live in hair follicles, primarily on the face, as well as in the meibomian glands of the eyelids; Demodex brevis live in the sebaceous glands of the skin.
Reducing the number of mites (hello, Alkaline and Acu Mask!) will usually also reduce the pain and sensitivity complaints in people with Rosacea.

Elevated Cortisol - stress and anxiety causes our cortisol levels to rise and inflammation to occur within the body and the skin.

Essential Fatty Acid deficiency – Efa’s allow us to keep a healthy thick cell membrane ( the outer layer of our skin cells). They also work on achieving a healthy barrier function. Good barrier function means the capillary networks in the skin do not starve of oxygen, resulting in angiogenesis of the networks (commonly referred to as broken capillaries).

Having a healthy skin barrier reduces any inflammation within the skin.

Family History (Genes)– many people who suffer from rosacea have a close relative with the condition.

Medications:– blood pressure tablets and some pain killers.

Overuse of topical steroid creams and harsh topical creams and peels

Menopause– during menopause women can experience hot flushes which can aggravate or even sometimes trigger early onset rosacea.

In clinic treatment options
  • LED light therapy alternating 633nm (red) and 833nm (infared) to help restore barrier function and cell function.

  • Alkaline Skin Treatment

  • Skin Peels

What you should know
  • Unfortunately, there is no exact treatment to eliminate Rosacea. Treatment involved are there to manage rosacea symptoms.

  • The priority when managing rosacea is the internal systems.

We need to look for all the triggers and eliminate them.

  • Getting onto internal supplements such as the Regul8 Gut Cleanse will help restore healthy gut function, as well as EFA’S for deficiencies but also barrier repair. Seeing a naturopath to eliminate the potential SIBO in the gut might also be necessary. You will also need to address any deficiencies such as Zinc, iron, Vit B.

  • Home prescriptives are important for a healthy barrier function which will reduce any inflammation within the skin. This will include DMK EFA's, Beta Gel, Seba-e oil (in some instances) Herb and Mineral mist, Betagen or Transgenesis is a rough starting point.

  • Clinical treatments in conjunction with removing the aggravating causes and restoring the barrier function of the skin include LED light therapy alternating between 633nm and 833nm for 2 weeks combined with DMK Enzyme Therapy with pre exfoliants and IPL or Skin Needling & Peels.

  • DMK Enzyme therapy combined with pre exfoliants such as alkaline (which helps kill the demodex mite largely responsible for the inflammation)– this will help to correct how the skin is functioning by strengthening the skin, bringing more nutrient’s and a fresh oxygenated look to the skin, flushes out the lymphatic system of any toxins and cause’s reverse osmosis within and around the skin cells.
