What is it ?

Aging is an accumulation of cellular damage, starting already in our late 20's.Characteristics of aging include fine lines and wrinkles, trans-epidermal water loss, dehydration, epidermal thinning, collagen loss,flattening of the dermal/epidermal junction and hyperpigmentation - and broken capillaries start to show.

From the age of 30 onwards our cell turn over (skin's renewal) slows down between 30-50%.
In the epidermis our melanocytes and Langerhans cells (our skin's immune system) start to get sluggish.
Our desquamating enzymes slow down, which means more dull appearance.
The wound healing process slows down.

Another thing that's important to note is declined estrogen levels and essential fatty acids also play a big role in the loss of barrier function and thickness of the skin.
If you are peri menopausal or menopausal it can be worthwhile seeing a hormone specialist or naturopath who can help balance your hormone levels out. The lack of essential fatty acids is one thing we can get onto easily - we stock sever different types here at The Lab – and before you start any treatment regimen this is a must to start with. Otherwise we'll just cause more inflammation and work on a skin that isn't fully functioning.

So it's easy to see why we have to really think about supporting the skin and its immune system before we do anything too drastic, like a massive peel or heat based treatments.

 

In the dermis there is fewer nutrient transfers because blood vessels reduce. Loss of collagen and a reduction of GAGS (Glycosaminoglycans) happen which can result in a lax appearance of skin and the formation of wrinkles. Think of it as a mattress losing it's springs and don't have the same bounce as it did before...

Lifestyle factors

These are just a few things you can do to start slowing down the aging process internally

• Stress – Stress is a major contributor to slowing down our production of collagen. When we are stressed, we run on high cortisol levels. Cortisol interferes with the body’s ability to absorb nutrients and it also breaks down the body's growth factors. Stress also creates inflammation and essentially interrupts the production of collagen.

• Breath based exercise such as yoga or Pilates creates a mind/body connection that reduces cortisol

• levels in the body. Another great tool is daily meditation. Try using the app Smiling Mind.

• Inflammation– We know that an inflammation in the body leads to an acidic environment. The human body functions at its most optimum in an alkaline state. This includes the functions in the skin that create healthy young skin cells. To keep your body in an alkaline state we recommended cutting down things like caffeine, alcohol, cigarettes, and to up your intake of foods like bitter greens, brassica vegetables, and starting the day with a lemon water.

• Sun– UV exposure is one of the biggest things in our environment that age us. Even when we cant see it and feel it we are being exposed to UV rays that are breaking down our precious collagen. Using a high-quality SPF is one of the most important things we can do to prevent aging. In all months, in all weather we must protect ourselves from the sun!

 

What foods to include and exclude from your diet

 

What foods to include 

These are the foods that are great for your health and body, and will keep you feeling the best version of yourself! 

• Collagen powder/supplements

• Good Fats (these increase EFAs in the body) includes things like avocado, flaxseed and safflower seed oils, fatty fish like salmon, nuts and seeds

• Brazil nuts – these are high in selenium which is a vital nutrient for the skin

• Alkalising foods such as brassica vegetables, bitter leafy greens, lemon water

• Foods high in Vit A – think foods that are yellow or orange in colour (pumpkin, sweet potatoes)

• Foods high in Vit C – Oranges, lemons, limes

What foods to reduce 

These are things that will create inflammation in the body, inhibit the absorption of vital nutrients or spike the cortisol levels – all things that speed up the aging process.

• Caffeine

• Alcohol

• Processed foods

• Refined Sugars

• Gluten (if you have gut health issues)

 

 

Professional treatments 

Your Skin Clinician will have made recommendations for professional treatments based on your specific skin conditions, concerns and lifestyle factors. These may have included some of the following treatments. Note that many of these modalities can be combined for advanced anti-aging results

• Enzyme Therapy treatments (any treatment regime is recommended to start with at least 2 Enzyme Therapy treatments to restore function. It leads to a better treatment outcome)

Topical at home products to avoid

• Anything to harsh or abrasive on the skin (such as physical exfoliants with a rough texture, things high in AHA/BHAs if they havn't been prescribed to you, and homemade exfoliants like sugar/salt scrubs).

• Soaps to cleanse the skin – these have a highly alkaline ph level that dry’s the skin of all its natural oils, and interrupt the skins barrier function.

• Oils and home emulsions – things like coconut oils and almond oils feel lovely and enriching on the skin, but they actually interrupt the skins ability to desquamate like it should and can be comedogenic in the pores, resulting in dull lifeless skin. If not properly formulated they can also bind to your skin's natural oils and cause excessive dryness.

• Prescription Vitamin A - the skin actually cannot make use of Retinoic Acid, so it causes extreme dryness, sensitivity and thinning of the skin. Long term the barrier function is so disrupted we see accelerated ageing and increased sensitivities yourself!
