Pigmentation

Pigmentation

Pigmentation is our skin’s natural defence system from UVR and other forms of topical and internal inflammation. It’s a reactive response to damage being inflicted on the skin cells.

This damage then presents in the form of pigmentation – ie little brown spots, larger brown splotches or darkening of localised areas. These can be present on any part of the body –usually areas with the most amount of sun exposure.

A quick tip to avoid pigmentation you ask? ALWAYS wear SPF, rain, hail or shine. There are a range of different SPF strengths and consistencies that will be prescribed to suit you and your lifestyle!

See our blog below for tonnes of more information on pigmentation, including lifestyle tips on how to best prevent it!

Pigmentation

What causes it

Pigmentation presents differently for everyone. Below are the pigmentation types and what contributes to them:

  •  Ephelides (Freckles): little brown spots present on areas of high sun exposure. These are caused from unprotected UVR exposure.

  • Post-inflammatory Hyperpigmentation pigment that presents post inflammation or injury to the skin. This can be caused from acne, skin abrasions, burns, excess heat and wrong treatment choices.

  • Melasma or Chloasma (Mask of Pregnancy) this is triggered by hormones, internal inflammation and stress.. This is a very common condition amongst pregnancy or those on medication that effects hormones (oral contraceptive pill and progesterone based medications) These medications cause the pituitary gland to make too much melanin stimulating hormone. It presents as large blotchy patches, or mask like patches usually on the forehead, under eyes, top lip and cheeks. It is almost always totally symmetrical on both sides... Although it’s a hormone disorder,  Melasma is exacerbated by heat and sun exposure.

  • Solar Lentigines (Liver Spots) presents as spots of dark pigment with rounded or uneven edges. This is triggered by excess sun exposure and is very common in people over the age of 50

What topical and internal triggers to avoid
  • Highly inflammatory foods: sugars, dairy, wheat, excessive alcohol

  • Over exfoliation with AHA/BHA granular scrubs of harsh based products.

  • Certain essential oils such as citrus, tea tree and lavender oil

  • Harsh “brightening” products such as Hydroquinone

  • Excess and unprotected sun exposure

  • Long hot showers

  • Reduce internal stressors implementing stress reducing practices and activities like mindfulness and meditation.

Lifestyle tips for preventing pigmentation

Tip 1:ALWAYS wear SPF, rain, hail or shine. There are a range of different SPF strengths and consistencies that will be prescribed to suit you and your lifestyle.

Tip 2:Get your vitamins right!
Use your vitamin C formulations in the morning and your vitamin A over night. Vitamin A causes sun sensitivity

Tip 3:Wear UV protection sunglasses. We know that when UV light enters your eyes, it stimulates the pituitary gland which then releases more melanin stimulating hormone. This can mean increased pigmentation production.

Tip 4:As much as possible, avoid taking long, hot showers and eating too much hot spicy foods if you have hormonal pigmentation.Believe it or not, the skin doesn't discriminate between internal and external heat.

Tip 5:Essential fatty acids (EFAs for short) work to keep our cell membranes healthy and functioning properly. They play a huge role in overall skin and body health. Having a deficiency in EFAs allows pigment to be deposited into the keratinocyte cells incorrectly, due to poor cell function. This is one of the contributing factors as well as vitamin deficiencies or malabsorption of essential vitamin and, minerals.
So when we hand you those EFA's, know they're an absolute MUST if we're treating your pigment...

Tip 6:Don't over exfoliate - and don't go for the nearest laser!
The amount of times we get enquiries from people wanting a micro dermabrasion or scrub to get rid of pigmentation is mind blowing.
And also, a little tip: those constant home peeling sessions with salicylic or glycolic acids probably make your pigmentation worse.
Treating pigmentation successfully takes patience, knowledge and choosing the right modalities. That's our jam!
